A couple of days ago the IKEA product guide 2010 fell on the doormat in many homes in our country.
On the cover the slogan: ‘Design your own life’ is largely displayed.
When I read the slogan it made me think. I realized that I am still living to much in what, from this moment on , I’ll call the: ‘IKEA-Mentality’. We (I) actually are constantly busy designing, and building our own lives to the things we like and want. When I read the slogan, I got pointed to the fact that God is the architect of my life.
What I think God was asking me was: ‘Why are you trying to change and adapt that complicated blueprint of your life, to your will and needs? Why are you trying to build you life with that little wrench and the screwdriver you have in your toolbox.. I am standing here next to you, I designed your life. I am the Almighty, who made the blueprint, and am able to do anything by just thinking about it. Why do you want to do it yourself?’
Why should we turn away from the ikea-mentality? God shows us in Jeremiah 29:11:
“11 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” (ESV)
God is giving us a wonderful promise here! Maybe you are thinking that this isn’t personal enough for you. Maybe you’re thinking it doesn’t apply to your life. Let’s see what else God is saying to us in Isaiah 58:11:
“11 And the LORD will guide you continually
and satisfy your desire in scorched places
and make your bones strong;
and you shall be like a watered garden,
like a spring of water,
whose waters do not fail.” (ESV)
God wants you to have a ‘needy’ attitude, so that He can start design and create the garden of your live to His design and there after maintain it together (!) with you!
Of course every garden has weeds in it and some of those weeds you can exterminate yourself.
But sometimes there are weeds where you can’t do anything against. Those weeds that will keep growing and returning to destroy and overgrow all the beautiful flowers and plants God planted in your garden. (Think about, anger, hatred, pornography, jealousy, disrespect, prideness) When you see that happen or coming then you should and could ask God for help, He will gladly provide it!
He is saying to you: ‘Please come, my dear daughter, my dear son, please come before the weeds start to overgrow your garden, so we can destroy the weeds before it is too late!’
Now I guess you are thinking, what if God is planting flowers in my garden that I don’t like? Or doesnt plant flowers that I would like to have in my garden (life)?
God also asks you to come with things like that. If you really want it, you should ask God about it. But God is not like Santa clause.
If that, what you are asking is within God’s will and plans and maybe within the condition He has for you, He will grant you that one beautiful flower in your life. The flower you are longing for with a sincere and faithful heart. But, if you are allowing plants in your life God doesn’t want to have in your garden He will also show you and make it clear.
The Question God, I think is asking us: ‘Are you answering my call for absolute surrender to me? Or are you going to try to do it yourself? Do you want to walk in my will and in your calling and arrive at your destination?’
I made my choice: NO more Ikea-mentality.
